Review: The Great American Novel by Philip Roth

This book took my breath away – it is brilliant fun.

I seem to love modern American writing for some reason, and this guy crams every last bit of it into the opening passages – from Moby Dick to the Great Gatsby, via Mark Twain and Ernest Hemingway. This is electric.

I loved it from start to finish.

Highly recommended – even if you don’t read this, or don’t want to shell out on the book, then the next time your in Waterstones just sneak a peak at the first few pages to see what your missing out on.

If you’re forced into a choice between this and American Pastoral, then go for American Pastoral every time (and do it before the movie comes out).
