Review: Oedipus the King by Sophocles

Now this play is just horrific – about the worst possible plot anybody has ever thought of – a dude kills his dad, and marries his mother (unknowingly). To finish it off, he scratches his eyes out with brooches.

He becomes king along the way though, so, you know, swings and roundabouts, eh?

This play sticks with you for years after you’ve read it, but come on, do you really want to read this?

Oh man, I’m shuddering just thinking about it – I read a bunch of the Classics this year. If you’re interested in these types of books, then I recommend the Annals of Imperial Rome instead. It’s a bit more soap-opera-y, and less, well, awful.
