Review: Luminaries by Eleanor Catton

Ace book – it won the 2013 Booker Prize. It’s a kind of detective story set amongst the gold mines of New Zealand in the 1860’s. Except it’s not quite that, the characters are based on signs of the zodiac, and interact with each other based on astrologial rules.

If all of this sounds like hippy nonsense, you needn’t worry, it’s a good read, that is more enjoyable than you think (if no-one told you the characters were based on astrological signs, you’d probably not notice).

Anyway, if you’re in a Booker Prize frame of mind, this is a good one to get you going.
