Review: Can’t Anybody Here Play this Game? by Jimmy Breslin

This thing is brilliant. It’s about the ’62 Mets – the worst team in baseball history. It’s written in the straight talking kind of way that only a newspaper writer can do, had me smiling from start to finish, laughing out loud every ten minutes, and nostalgic for a team I’ve never even seen.

If you’re a fan of an underdog (all the best fans support underdogs) then you should think about keeping this book next to wherever you keep your season ticket to remind yourself just how good you’ve got it.

I’ve a lot of favourite bits in this short book, but the bit I love above all else is the reason why we should all root for a team like the ’62 Mets:

I also love appendix – it’s just a list of all the records the Mets broke in ’62. They’re all bad records to have, and it’s a pretty long list.

You’ve just gotta love a team *this* bad. I can’t recommend this book enough.
